GrapeBreed4IPM launches the interactive tool “Resist Me… If You Can!”

The European project GrapeBreed4IPM has launched the interactive tool “Resist Me… If You Can!” on its Capacity Building Website, an educational game designed to raise awareness within the wine sector about the importance of preserving the durability of disease-resistant grapevine varieties.

Downy mildew and powdery mildew remain two of the main threats to European viticulture. Although resistant grapevine varieties (DRVs or PIWIs) can significantly reduce the use of fungicides, their long-term effectiveness depends on proper management. Pathogen populations can adapt over time and overcome the plants’ resistance mechanisms, making it essential to combine these varieties with integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

To address this challenge, the French Vine and Wine Institute (IFV) has developed the interactive game “Resist Me… If You Can!”, which offers a practical way to explore the relationship between resistant varieties, pathogen evolution and vineyard management decisions.

During the game, participants take on the role of winegrowers managing their vineyards over ten growing seasons. Up to four players or teams must make strategic decisions to maintain vineyard productivity, reduce fungicide use and prevent pathogens from adapting to resistant varieties.

The tool demonstrates that genetic resistance alone does not guarantee long – lasting protection. It also highlights the importance of collective action, as each player’s decisions can influence the overall outcome, reproducing situations similar to those encountered under real vineyard conditions.

“Resist Me… If You Can!” is intended for winegrowers, technical advisers, students, researchers and other stakeholders interested in gaining a better understanding of genetic resistance management in grapevines. Its practical and participatory approach makes it a valuable resource for training, outreach and knowledge transfer activities.

The game will be available free of charge in five languages and will help strengthen the adoption of sustainable strategies to protect vineyards, reduce pesticide use and maintain farm profitability.
