How can fungus resistant grape varieties become a stronger part of the European wine market? This question was at the centre of a Design Thinking Workshop held in Austria as part of the GrapeBreed4IPM project.
Experts from viticulture, research and the wine sector came together to exchange experiences and develop new perspectives on the role of robust grape varieties in the transformation of European viticulture. Through interactive group work, participants discussed current challenges for PIWI varieties, ranging from market perception and communication to practical barriers in adoption.
The Design Thinking format encouraged open dialogue and creative thinking. Participants worked collaboratively to develop ideas for strengthening the positioning of PIWI wines and improving their visibility among producers, consumers and the wine trade. The discussions highlighted that successful innovation in viticulture requires not only breeding progress but also new approaches to communication and market strategies.
The workshop was organised within the framework of the GrapeBreed4IPM project by the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft Ludwigshafen together with national project partners.
Participants and stakeholders from across Europe are also invited to contribute to the ongoing GrapeBreed4IPM survey on the future of sustainable viticulture and the acceptance of robust grape varieties. The survey takes only a few minutes and helps to generate valuable insights for the project.
